The Warglaive of Azzinoth items are among the most sought-after items in all of World of Warcraft. These weapons drop from Illidan Stormrage in upcoming Black Temple raid. Players in The Burning Crusade Classic are about to get their first attempts at defeating Illidan and obtaining the Warglaives when Phase 3 raids release on January 27th. Some lucky few may even see a Warglaive of Azzinoth drop on their first kill!
Just how rare are these weapons? Who should receive them first in your raid? What class sees the biggest DPS increase from getting the Warglaives,
Krieger
or
Schurke
? We'll answer all that in this mini-guide about the coolest weapons in the game, the legendary main hand
Kriegsgleve von Azzinoth
and off hand
Kriegsgleve von Azzinoth
.
How Rare Are The Warglaives?
The best estimates for Warglaive drop rate are 5% per glaive, independent rolls for each glaive mainhand and offhand, and separate from the other loot drops. This comes from historical data and if that is correct it means it is possible to see both Warglaives on the same kill! It could be that the drop rate is different on Burning Crusade Classic, but we don't have enough data yet to be sure if anything is changed. Assuming the historical data is correct, here are some figures:
Your chance to see at least 1 mainhand
and
at least 1 offhand is...
26.2%
after 14 kills.
50.1%
after 24 kills.
75.9%
after 40 kills.
Your chance to see no glaives at all is...
59.9%
after 5 kills.
35.8%
after 10 kills.
12.9%
after 20 kills.
That is a nice way of saying that even if your guild has promised you the first Warglaives, you could be raiding for many months before even seeing them drop. On the other hand, there will surely be some insanely lucky people who complete their Warglaive set within the first month - its all in the dice!
Which Class Benefits The Most From Warglaives?
There is no doubt that the
Die Zwillingsklingen von Azzinoth
are the best weapons available for the whole expansion for both Fury
Krieger
s and Combat
Schurke
s, but are they a bigger upgrade for one class or the other?
To make this comparison, we will rely on simulation tools made by community members to estimate the damage gain of both warriors and rogues. The comparison is both warglaives against the second best option in phase 3 for each class. For rogues, the second best option is
Schnitzler des rachsüchtigen Gladiators
&
Klinge der Unbändigkeit
, for warriors the second best option is double
Schnitzler des rachsüchtigen Gladiators
. With this setup the outcome is pretty clear:
Combat
Schurke
s gain more DPS from
Die Zwillingsklingen von Azzinoth
in a single-target situation like most bosses.
Fury
Krieger
s gain more DPS from
Die Zwillingsklingen von Azzinoth
in a multi-target situation like most trash packs.
This difference largely comes to
Krieger
s simply having better multi-target damage abilities like
Spalten
,
Weitreichende Stöße
, and
Wirbelwind
on short cooldowns.
Schurke
s only have
Klingenwirbel
- this spell is more powerful than the
Krieger
's options when it is active, but it is only a 15 second duration on a 2 minute cooldown so it cannot be utilized nearly as much.
The trouble with relying on simulation tools is that they are generally assuming close to ideal conditions, buffs, and execution by the players. In reality you will often have a case where one player is just better than another - spending more time actively attacking, maintaining their rotations better, and using more consumables. In that case the better player will very likely gain more damage from Warglaives regardless of single target or multi target.
Who Should Get Warglaives of Azzinoth?
It may be a surprise to some readers that there are guilds that actually
do not
assign loot strictly based on maximizing raid DPS gains. Most guilds consider many factors other than "which player's DPS will increase the most?" when deciding who should receive an item - or have point systems that remove the decision process entirely.
Each guild is different, but I expect most would weigh out-of-raid contributions like managing rosters, handling recruitment, or frequently helping with attunements as more significant factors than maximizing raid DPS gains. It takes much more than just good DPS to make a guild run smoothly.
There will undoubtedly be players demanding priority on Warglaives for whatever reason they can come up with, or threatening to quit if they aren't promised the first Warglaives. Your guild is probably better off letting those people quit and doing what it takes to replace them, especially if it is a Protection
Krieger
. It may be a tough spot to be in now, but if your guild leadership capitulates to the demands what is to stop the player from making similar demands for another item? When they quit this time, now they're walking away with one of your guild's precious Warglaives!
Best of luck to everyone reading, and may you all be blessed with many Warglaive drops! Let us know in the comments if you're getting the first Warglaives in your guild, or how much you think they will sell for in a gold bid raid. Are you prepared?
