No Bonus Experience on Heirlooms in Shadowlands
09.07.2020 um 13:31
interview with MrGM
, Lead Game Designer Morgan Day mentioned that Heirlooms will no longer grant bonus experience gains. This comes alongside a
number of leveling changes
which not only condense the level cap down to 60, but also greatly increase the pace of leveling, while allowing players to choose what expansion content they wish to level in.

That big experience bonus made a lot of sense in a world where you're talking potentially 100 hours to level up, or a large chunk of time to level; that big bump was something that we felt made a lot of sense. But in a world where our goal for leveling form 1-50 is much, much smaller, closer to 10-20 hours for people who are experienced with the game, or will find ways to do it even faster! We definitely know that part of what makes those heirlooms feel exciting and interesting was that unique experience bonus, so we do want to add something to replace that which will hopefully be equally as beneficial or feel unique and interesting for your level up experience, but not necessarily "here's a bunch of extra experience gain".
While undoubtedly some players will be upset by this change, considering themselves "cheated" out of whatever gold or other currency they spent on heirlooms, it's important to remember that heirlooms are not becoming worthless overnight. They will still exist as pieces of gear which level up alongside you, near eliminating the need to manage your equipment during the leveling process, which is a commonly overlooked but still very important perk. Morgan also spoke about the possibility of replacing the experience bonus with a different perk to keep retain the uniqueness of Heirlooms, though whether that will be some kind of reputation bonus, combat bonus, quality of life improvement, or other perk is unknown.
On the other hand, the experience bonuses represent very large gains, and removing them helps narrow the gap between those players who have heirlooms and those who do not. With the leveling process also being sped up considerably (current speed leveling records are
under 4 hours
), it's less a matter of
the bonus so much as simply baking it in to keep everybody on a more even playing field. Just keep that in mind when asking for a refund due to losing the experience bonus, when you're already getting a faster leveling experience for free.
