Diablo 4 Mysterious Character
Samuel worked on a character that is currently still a mystery in the Diablo IV community, but who he's named 'Bob'. It's a good name. He looks like a 'Bob'.
Hi everyone, the Blizzard Diablo team was kind enough to let me post turntables of this character. It has also come to my attention that he's still a mystery character on the online community, and there's only theories of whom he is. So I won't spoil it for anyone and we shall name him Bob for now. Once the game team reveals who he is I'll update his name here. Bob was one of the funnest characters I recently got to texture and lookdev. It was one of those cases where you get a lot of references and everyone just likes pieces of those images, but none of them is really what the target is. So I had quite a bit of exploration to do on the face but it had to be done really quick.
First of all I need to thank Dennis Bredow, a friend and incredible artist who made a switch with me, to give me this character and take Bolvar on WoW-Shadowlands, so that I had a chance to work on this cinematic as well. Dennis had done the first human on the Diablo 4 cinematic and the rest of the team and I heavily used it as a guideline for ours. And of course, its always fun to work with one of Jason Huang's models, because his anatomy knowledge and modeling skills are top notch.
Making a pale white character is very tricky because as soon as you take so much blood out of the skin the character starts looking dead. So if you pay close attention to the turntables you'll notice that there's an incredible array of colors on his skin that I put in, but overall it still looks like a pale white character. Also! If you scroll through the light rig rotation you'll see the eye shader I made for his Iris, it shows through sometimes... so creepy.
The Leather itself was the biggest task, this guy is covered in leather, so I put a lot of my time into making the different parts of his leather outfit feel interesting. The broad warbles were done by Jason in sculpting, and then I proceeded to do all the fine wrinkles, and scales in texturing. The Scales on his cowl were one of the toughest areas for me to do on him. The last part was to age everything, the funnest thing to do yet most time consuming phase. I don't age or destroy materials until i'm sure the base is working well.
I didn't do much on the red cape on Lilith, just helped a bit at the end, the bulk of the surfacing work for the cape was done by Wey Wong. But it's a cool shot to see Bob in =)
